Once you get past learing your way around which has been a barrier for alot of people since windows hasn't changed much from 95 to XP, it is a far better operating system than XP.
Multimedia features in the OS is great.

This is definitely a hot topic for a lot of people . I'm on my Vista laptop right now but I also have an XP laptop and a XP desktop. I happen to prefer XP but I guess it's just a personal preference.

Yep,
I like the sidebar, and the way it's so easy to compress and send photos by email. I love the live preview of programs on your task bar, and the 3D flip (hit the Winows + tab key on your keybord) is really slick too.
You can get rid of the prompt that you need permission to continue as well.

The first thing I do when I set up a Vista box is disable the UAC because most people complain about it anyway. The sidebar is a great feature too but there are lots of things you can do to XP to make it look and feel like Vista. For me there just isn't enough new features to spend the money on the upgrade yet. Once I start replacing my systems and the new ones come with Vista then I will use it more

I hear ya,
And yes, there is the Vista transformation pack for XP, but you need to install Window blinds etc...
UAC is a pain for us I.T. people, but it's a godsend for us to when it comes to regular desktop users.
One thing about XP is the Group policy and domain policy on networks really are buggy and don't always funtion as they should. On Vista, the policy sticks every time. And, security lockdown is alot better.

Google sidebar can be added to XP. I don't have it on my XP machine but it's kinda growing on me since I bought a computer running Vista.

I've used the Google sidebar before and it is a nice program to give you a sidebar in XP.

My mother just got a laptop with Vista on it. That means I have to reteach her everything, even though it isn't terribly different. Yay me!

Here is a neat quick tip from CNet TV that shows you how to make Vista look like XP. That should help your mom (and you).

She actually picked it up pretty quick. Turns out it isn't all that much of a change unless you actually know how to use XP well.

vista is a great os...if you have a good machine.
I used Vista RC2 for about 6 months or so and really liked it, but I decided against getting the final version until I get a true dx10 graphics card.

Yup, but even with my new Saphire card, it still doesn't work as well as it should.

Change is great! And I agree with most things that have already been said, but I refuse to go to Vista until they improve the "oh-so-obvious" slowness in its architecture. I'm sorry, but it's just rotten. I had Vista running on my new tablet, which is well capable of running the OS, and it was running fine. I then switched to XP and the speed increase was so noticeable that I couldn't believe it.

And wouldn't you know it, I have one now! Got myself a 9600 GT OC manufactured by MSI. And now I'm also running vista (But honestly I may switch back once I get my new hard drive)!
