Hi all;
I am concerned with the rumored demise of the Windows XP.  I have
a Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows XP and Service Pack Candidate
3.   Frankly, it was a little hard to get used to it, and I certainly
DO NOT want the hassle of a new OS, etc.
Here is my question: Forums, Lists, Groups dedicated to
maintaining and supporting Windows XP after M$ ceases to, and also
books like, hypothetically "Maintain and support your Win XP for
Idiots."  or the like.
Can you help me please locate such groups or handbooks, please?
I certainly would appreciate the help!
    Best!

Tech support Windows XP won't actually be discontinued until after 2009 sometime. Microsoft may stop releasing patches and unfortunately there isn't much we can do about it. When this happens some people might try and release custom security fixes but I doubt this will last long.

There's always people who use old operating system after they have been discontinued so there will be groups to contact when you need help.

Here are a couple links to Google Groups that provide help for Windows XP

24hoursupport.helpdesk

it.comp.os.win.xp

Don't forget that we are here to help you out as well.

Cheers!

To be honest. I think Microsoft will change their mind and continue support for XP longer.

I can say that XP won't last long.

Software and hardware companies are making their devices for Vista. 64bit is already becoming the standard for servers, and 32bit will soon be a memory.

You can keep XP for as long as you like, but the next time you get a new computer, it may not work as well or have backward compatibility.

XP was released in 2001, Vista was released in December 2006. I don't expect that XP will be supported much longer than next year.

That's what I am hearing from a lot of people but I'm not sure if it will go away that quickly or not. The organization I am with just finished upgrading to XP and we will probably end up skipping Vista all together and then only upgrading with the next version.

I'm hoping that MS will see the need to continue at least providing security updates and licenses for XP for some time to come. I just think of the backlash they had when they tried to remove Win 98 updates from Windows Update and wonder if the same type of backlash would happen if they discontinued XP anytime soon.

Personally, I intend to keep using XP at least until Windows 7 comes out.

I hear you guys,

Vista's already up to SP1. XP was a good OS, finally after SP2 the OS was solid.

Many ppl still use Windows 2000, but again not much new drivers for it anymore.

Microsoft has the big hardware manufacturers in their corner, that's the problem. So, newer computers will actually work better with vista. I've already started to see it.
Vista is also alot more expensive than XP, so it makes it less attractive to upgrade.

You said it right there. MS really does control our lives to an extent. We depend on them for so many things.

Hopefully there will be some hardware manufacturers who will see through that and realize there is still a market for XP users.
